DOCTOR DR. FINE
Dr. Fine grew up on the East Coast. He graduated from Massachusetts
Institute of Technology in 1961. He worked as a chemical engineer, conducted
cancer research at Brandeis University, and received his medical and
ophthalmology training at the Boston University Medical Center. He became
certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1972. Specializing
in cataract/IOL, refractive, and anterior segment surgery, he has been
in private practice in Eugene, Oregon since 1970.
During his years studying in Boston, Dr. Fine met his wife, Vicky,
then a student at Wellesley College. They have three grown children.
Dr. Fine is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the Oregon Health
and Science University in Portland, and a co-founder of the Oregon
Eye Surgery Center. He has held local, state, and national leadership
positions within organized medicine and ophthalmology. He served as
the president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery
in 2001 and is the secretary of the International Intraocular Implant
Club.
Dr. Fine is among the cataract surgeons listed in all editions of The Best Doctors in American and the first edition of Marquis' Who's
Who in Medicine and Healthcare. He received the American Academy of
Ophthalmology's Senior Honor Award and the prestigious Innovator's
Award, given annually by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Surgery. He was honored with the Baylor/Welsh Cataract and Refractive
Surgery Congress Maumenee award, the United Kingdom and Ireland Societies
for Cataract and Refractive Surgery Rayner Medal, the Brazilian Phaco
Club award, the Boston University School of Medicine Distinguished
Alumnus award, the Oregon Health and Sciences University Meritorious
Achievement Award, and the Lifetime Achievement Award for Extraordinary
Contributions in the Advancement of Ophthalmic Technology from Inside
Eyecare Technology. In 1999 he was named one of the 25 most influential
ophthalmologists of the 20th Century by a vote of 16,000 ophthalmologists
worldwide, polled by the American Society of Cataract and Refractive
Surgery. Dr. Fine has been a visiting professor at 29 medical schools
in the United States and abroad, and has delivered 12 named lectureships.
He has designed instruments and implants and has innovated many surgical
procedures including cortical cleaving hydrodissection, chip and flip,
crack and flip, and choo-choo chop and flip phacoemulsification techniques,
and the temporal self-sealing clear corneal incision. He has contributed
many publications to refereed medical journals and the medical press,
written chapters in textbooks and surgical atlases, and has lectured
and taught extensively throughout the world.
Dr. Fine is an avid motorcyclist, and is thoroughly enjoying his two
new granddaughters.
