We are proud to announce Dr. Fine’s induction into the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Hall of Fame. Dr. Hoffman introduced Dr. Fine during the ceremony, which took place at the annual teaching meeting. The honor comes after a career spanning more than 45 years in which Dr. Fine pioneered a multitude of ophthalmic techniques and technological advances. We could not be happier for our founding father.

This past month, we've been talking about the importance of diabetic eye exams. Did you know there are often no symptoms of diabetic eye disease until it’s reached an advanced state? Did you know the eyes are the only place in the body where doctors can look at your blood vessels? If diabetic changes are found in the eye, it usually indicates changes throughout the body. We'd be happy to take a look at you. Give us a call, 541.687.2110

Patients are asking about "the ban on hand sanitizers." We want to help clarify that hand sanitizers, like the kind we provide in our office, are safe to use! It is actually antibacterial soaps and washes that are under scrutiny. Here is an article straight from the source, FDA.gov, explaining the ban in detail.
Did you know: Oregon was the first state to pass a bill for Labor Day observance, on February 21, 1887...because we Oregonians know a good idea when we see one! Enjoy your long weekend, everyone. We'll be back in the office on Tuesday September 6th.

Happy Clinical Trials Day! Drs. Fine, Hoffman & Sims place a high priority on clinical research and wish to thank our many patients who have contributed to advancements in ophthalmology over many decades by partnering with us as we work to forward the field and provide the most technologically advanced patient care possible.
The first ever randomized clinical trial happened on board a ship back on May 20, 1747 and was conducted by a man named James Lind. He was trying to stop outbreaks of scurvy which, at the time, was a common ailment that killed tens of thousands of sailors. Since then, clinical trials have played a huge part in public health and medical progress. Please join us and the Association of Clinical Research Professionals (ACRP) in recognizing our clinical research teams here and around the country.

As we wrap up our celebration of Ophthalmic Medical Technicians week, we would like to share some thoughts from members of our technician team:
I’ve found fantastic patients and coworkers, and rewarding challenges, and the learning never stops in ophthalmology. I love it! The eyes have it!
–Laurie Brown, MBA, COMT, COE, OSA, OCS, CPSS,
I attended school for Accounting, however wound up in Optometry before coming to work for Drs. Fine, Hoffman & Sims. What intrigues me about ophthalmology is the diverse group of individuals I get to interact with. I have a passion for children, adults, and the elderly, this industry allows me to encounter and build relationships with all of them!
I was going to school to earn a Master’s Degree in Early Elementary Education when I started working in optometry. I moved into ophthalmology because I am always craving to learn more about the wonders of our eyes, including the new treatments available. The most rewarding aspect of my job as a technician is working with people to improve their quality of life by helping them to see clearly.
I came to eye care by accident, but chose ophthalmology for the chance to work with surgeons. I have scheduled eye surgery and was certified as a contact lens technician before coming to work at Drs. Fine, Hoffman & Sims. I find that the relationships I build with our patients last for years … and I enjoy watching their lives improve due to the skill of our surgeons and staff.
--Sue, COT, OCS
